Lilac

Common lilac is the old-fashioned spring bloomer you see in every Wyoming farmyard for good reason. The purple flower clusters are heavy with scent in May, and the shrub shrugs off cold, wind, and lean soil once it's rooted in. Plant it in full sun with room to sucker, and skip the heavy watering. Works well as a hedge, screen, or corner of a shelterbelt.
